The kind of places we book
Small, independent bed & breakfasts, farmhouses and inns, the kind run by owners who know the trail because it runs past their door. Rooms are en-suite wherever possible, and every booking includes a cooked or continental breakfast to launch the day's miles.
We book the same houses year after year, which matters more than star ratings: they know to serve breakfast early for long stages, hold dinner tables for late arrivals, and dry soaked boot-liners overnight without being asked.
Room types and singles
Double, twin and single rooms are available on every itinerary. Single rooms carry a supplement, not because we enjoy charging it, but because a solo walker occupies a room two people would otherwise share, and small B&Bs can't absorb that. The prices page shows single pricing plainly for every holiday.
The honest bit: the central section
Between Chollerford and Gilsland the trail crosses its emptiest, most spectacular country, which means the fewest beds precisely where every walker wants to stop. Two consequences:
- Book early. For May, June and September departures, the central-section houses fill months ahead. Enquiring early genuinely widens your options.
- Some nights sit off the trail. When the on-path houses are full (or don't exist, looking at you, Walton), your accommodation may be a few miles away. When that happens, transport between trail and bed is arranged and included, so your walking miles never grow.
Where the overnight stops fall
Typical overnight villages, east to west: Heddon-on-the-Wall, the East Wallhouses area, Chollerford, Once Brewed / Twice Brewed, Gilsland or Greenhead, Walton or Brampton, Carlisle, and Bowness-on-Solway. Your exact stops depend on the itinerary and availability, and are confirmed with your booking, every stage of every itinerary shows its typical overnights.
Dietary needs and special requests
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other breakfast needs are passed to every house in advance, mention them when you enquire. The same goes for ground-floor rooms, dog-friendly stays and anniversary flourishes. Small houses are usually delighted to help when they know in time.
