Day 1: Arrive in Gilsland
- Walking:
- None, travel day
- Feels like:
- Anticipation
Make your way to Gilsland, a small village straddling the Northumberland–Cumbria border, and settle into your B&B. If you arrive with daylight to spare, the Poltross Burn milecastle behind the old railway station is two minutes' walk and one of the best-preserved on the entire wall, a fitting first handshake.
Your route notes and luggage labels will be waiting for you. Eat well: tomorrow starts with the trail's summit.
Worth knowing: Nearest station is Brampton (or Haltwhistle with a short taxi). We include arrival guidance for rail and car in your pack; long-stay parking options are covered too.
